Pre-liminary program:

Saturday 20.08.2022

09:00-09:15       Short introduction (What is the course about? Why are we interested in freshwater biology? Introducing instructors and students)

09:15-10:00       General introduction (lakes, ponds, creeks, rivers and their characteristics), zonation and stratification of lakes and rivers, annual/seasonal changes in lakes and rivers

10:00-10:45       Life cycles of freshwater organisms - plankton, nekton, benthos, nutrient cycles, food web (production, consumption as processes), biotope-biocoenosis / interrelationships and dependence of the living and non-living

10:45-11:15       Introduction to sampling under water

 

11:15-12:30       Lunch break (barbecue)

 

12:30-13:00       Getting ready for first dive

13:00-14:00       First dive (approx. 45 min) and getting changed and storing equipment

14:00-15:30       Identifying things collected during the first dive, checking with microscope/binocular (at the same time, time for coffee and cookies)

15:30-16:15       Lakes in Finland and common organisms found

End of first day

09:00-09:45       Not every lake is the same… (examples of different lakes and freshwater habitats)

09:45-10:15       Getting ready for second dive

10:15-11:15       Second dive (approx. 45 min) and getting changed and storing equipment

11:15-12:00       Identifying things collected during the second dive, checking with microscope/binocular

 

12:00-13:00       Lunch break (barbecue)

 

13:00-13:30       Getting ready for third dive

13:30-14:30       Third dive (approx. 45 min) and getting changed and storing equipment

14:30-15:30       Identifying things collected during the third dive, checking with microscope/binocular (at the same time, time for coffee and cookies)

15:30-16:15       Anthropogenic impacts, neobiota and invasive species, sustainable diving

16:15:16:45        Feedback and closing the event
